Bar owners, staff and health officials call year-old state smoking ban a drag

Boyd Cottrell, 55, owner of Sporty O’Toole’s in Warren, successfully fought a fine for defying the workplace smoking ban. He lost a court challenge to the ban, which he calls discriminatory because it allows smoking at Detroit’s three casinos. He is trying to raise money to finance an appeal.

Judge denies Warren bar owners’ challenge to smoking ban but revokes fine

A Macomb County judge upheld the state smoking ban law but revoked a $500 fine against the owner of a Warren bar, somewhat disappointing about 100 supporters of the bar owner.

Warren bar owner sues over smoking ban

Boyd Cottrell says his Warren bar, complete with lottery machines, is no different from the Detroit casinos. But his patrons at Sporty O’Toole’s can’t smoke while they gamble, he says, unlike casino patrons, because of Michigan’s smoking ban that took effect May 1. Gaming floors at Detroit casinos are exempt from the ban.

Warren bar owner loses bid to overturn smoking ban

A judge today denied the bar owner’s request to declare the state’s smoking ban unconstitutional but did toss out a fine the man incurred, agreeing some elements of the law are confusing.
